Traditional Swedish glassmaking meets new facade technology at Kompassen shopping centre in Gothenburg
The amber-coloured glass blocks are in the shape of asymmetrical pyramids, each with a base measuring 200mm. Each block weighs 3–4kg and there are a total of 5,700 blocks on the exterior of Kompassen shopping centre. The cast glass blocks are mounted onto optical glass to maximise the lustre and create an invisible fastening to the backing.The design is based on creating a shopping street on which all the shops have their entrances right next to Kungsgatan, Fredsgatan, Östra Larmgatan and Kyrkogatan.
It’s a world-class design using amber-coloured glass handmade in Småland, giving Gothenburg city centre a new talking point.

IKEA ART EVENT 2018 with glass sculptures
ART EVENT 2018 featuring playful glass art. This one-off collection is designed by contemporary artists in close cooperation with highly skilled craftspeople at Målerås Glasbruk in Småland, a stone’s throw from where IKEA was founded. Målerås Glasbruk in Småland has created mouth-blown and hand-painted crystal glass figures inspired by manga, cartoon characters and traditional Swedish glass products. “We wanted to explore what happens when you combine traditional craftsmanship with newer art forms. I think we’ve found something interesting that can hopefully introduce a new generation to glass art,” says Henrik Most, Creative Leader at IKEA of Sweden.Art Event is a one-off collection that was available between April and August 2018.
Where the Light Leads
Alexander Lervik och Eva Dahlgren
In February 2017 the exhibition ‘Where the Light Leads’ premiered at Designgalleriet in Stockholm. It featured glass objects in a dark universe in which the glass was brought to life through light and music composed by artist Eva Dahlgren. The glass objects on display were created by Målerås Glasbruk in Småland in close cooperation withAlexander Lervik och Eva Dahlgren.
“I’ve worked on a number of exhibitions with leading creative talents in a range of cultural professions and have found it incredibly inspiring for the projects I’ve been involved in.
This time I wanted to collaborate with a musician to achieve an overall experience that stimulates all the senses, and from the outset my dream was to work with Eva Dahlgren,” says Lervik.
“What’s great about a technically advanced project like this is that you can’t get too attached to just one idea or solution. You’ve got to be constantly open and listen to others and their specialist knowledge. It makes the shared joy at the end result all the greater,” says Eva Dahlgren.
The exhibition also received a prize from the International Sound Awards for its outstanding sound.
FÄRG & BLANCHE - crispbread in glass

Färg & Blanche put on a highly personal exhibition. Inspired by the family’s history, and the crispbread factory once owned by the Blanche family, the show featured furniture, objects and installations in the distinguished apartment in the Södermalm district of Stockholm.
